Kinnaur the tribal district of Himachal Pradesh consists of Pooh, Moorang, Kalpa, Nichar and Sangla. It has been recently thrown open to the visitors and now one can start from Shimla to Kinnaur, Spiti, Lahaul to Manali or to Leh. Kinnaur is in the lap of the high Himalayan mountains rugged and cragy terrain which has fascination and beauty of its own. Last but not the least, for the anthropologist, scholars, writers and artists, the attractive tribal inhabitation of this tribal region where the Hindu, Buddhists cultures meet. The area of Kinnaur is about 6401 Sq. kms.

The hitherto forbidden motor road from Manali to Leh has now been opened. Traversing across incredible Himalayan terrain this 485 kms road takes you through high mountain passes, three of theni over 5000 rots, and into Lch situated at 3523 rots. On the way up and from the top of these passes you gaze out at wave after wave of mountain ranges that are backed by a deep melancholy an scape, the savage beauty ofthe country grips you. Deep narrow valleys and high plateaus are seen in hues of red, yellow, ochre and rust. Rocks and sand sculpted into weird shapes appear like illusions as you traverse to the roof top of the World.

Travelling eastward from Triloknath along the Chandra river, the road leads to the Kunzam pass 5000 mts. ahead lies the valley of Spiti, a veritable Shangri-La. On either sides of the pass is a marvels view of the snow-clad mountains. Descending on the other side of the pass, in the enchanting valley, is Losar, a picturesque hamlet set midst of villages, the barren wilderness. On either side of the river are a number of villages. Into the cold valley, from the snowy range surrounding it, descend glaciers. The Great Himalayan range passes South of Spiti. The highest peak is Shilla 7025 mts. Inter-dependent on each other for communications and trade both remain cut off from the rest of the world for greater part of the year. Rohtang pass remains open from May-October and it is only at this time that one can cross Kunzam pass to enter Spiti, the other route involves a perilous trek up the Sutlej river valleys from the Kinnaur side.
